Wood Glue, Ingredients, Types, and Applications

What Is Wood Glue?

It is an adhesive used to tightly bond pieces of wood together. It is white and odorless and has a relatively high viscosity. This adhesive is made of polymer materials and has great flexibility.

This chemical product can be dissolved in water and plastic paint. It is used in various industries, especially in wood and carpentry industries, handi crafts, and furniture making.

History:

A few thousand years ago humans used a type of glue made of animal protein. It is still used today and preferred in some applications.

But from the beginning of the 19th century, wood glue gained a special place in Europe.

Its use reached its peak in the First World War and in the construction of ships, trains, planes, and trucks.

Now animal glue especially hoofs and hide glue, was the primary adhesive of choice for many types of woodworking, including furniture and lutherie, for many centuries.

Types:

There are different types of wood adhesive, each of which has a specific application according to its ingredients and adhesive strength.

The most popular types are:

1- Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA wood Glue):

PVAs are traditional glues and some of the most common adhesives. They are also called “Aliphatic Resins”, “White Glue“, and “School Glue”. PVA belongs to polyvinyl esters and is a type of thermoplastic.

Polyvinyl acetate provides a strong wood-to-wood bond but will not adhere strongly or consistently to nonporous materials, such as metal or plastics. this is the most common wood glue at home depot.

2- Polyurethane Glue:

Polyurethane is one of the best waterproof wood glues available. Polyurethane adhesives are normally prepolymers terminated with isocyanate groups.

In addition to wood, this is used in metals, stones, plastics, and ceramics.

It does not air-dry like PVA glues, but instead chemically reacts with moisture in the objects being glued or even in the air. It expands when it cures, improving adhesion where the fit is not tight.

Polyurethane glue has high adhesion and does not damage wood components and details.

3- Epoxy Glue:

Epoxy, usually as a two-part mix system, cures under a wider range of temperatures and moisture content than other glues.

They are very strong adhesives with high-filling properties. Epoxy wood glue does not require pressing.

They are water-proof and they can be blended with a dry powder with an appropriate color to balance it with the color of the wood.

The use of double-component epoxy requires careful attention to the mixing ratio of the two parts. It bonds to most cured wood adhesives (except PVA).

4- Cyanoacrylate glue:

This glue is usually used for gluing surfaces that are hard and strong, and the drying speed is usually high. Even apart from carpentry, this glue has many uses in homes. Cyanoacrylate, or CA glue, is used to join hard pieces together.

It cures in a very short period of time which is one of its advantages. The adhesive strength of this type of glue is very high and you can only remove it if you break or separate the wooden item.

This adhesive model increases its speed when it is placed in the desired area using an activating spray. It’s one of the strongest wood glue.

5- Hide Glue:

This type of glue is made from animal hide. It is mostly used in making instruments such as bows, guitars, etc. There are two types of hide adhesive. The first is hot hide glue, which is prepared by heating it in a container with water.

When heated, it becomes liquid and when cooled, it becomes solid. This type of adhesive should be applied with a brush in the desired place.

Another type of hide glue is liquid skin glue that offers in a bottle. It can be used just like PVA glue.

The advantage of using liquid hide glue compared to PVA is that: «It is transparent wood glue and does not leave any mark at the place of use».

Most wood adhesives should be clamped while the glue sets. As a result, woodworkers usually use tight joints that require surprisingly little glue to hold large pieces of wood together. Therefore, most of them must be clamped while the glue hardens.
